Stump Grinding in Portland ME

A stump left after tree removal in Portland ME is not a finished job.

We grind it out below grade. No regrowth. Nothing left to mow around or explain to buyers.

Portland’s older properties often have stumps — from trees removed years ago, from storm damage, from previous owners who took the tree and left the base. A stump is an obstacle, a sprouting problem, a trip hazard, and in a tight urban lot, it’s wasted ground you can’t use.

Stump grinding removes it completely. We grind to below grade, fill the cavity with the grindings, and leave the site ready to seed, plant, or simply forget about.

The process

**Utility locates**

Before we grind near anything, we confirm underground utility locations. Portland’s older properties sometimes have utility lines, irrigation, and other buried infrastructure in unexpected places. We check before the grinder moves.

**Grinding**

We grind the stump and root flare to 6–12 inches below grade — below the level where regrowth is possible and deep enough for planting or seeding over. The grinder works through the wood in passes, reducing it to chips and debris.

**Cavity fill**

The grindings go back into the hole. The site is left level and tidy. Grindings decompose over time and improve the soil. After a season, the area is ready for grass seed or planting.

**Surface roots**

If significant surface roots run across the lawn, we discuss at the estimate whether grinding them out is practical and what it adds to the scope.

What happens to an un-ground stump

**Sprouting.** Maples, elms, and most hardwoods will send up sprouts from a remaining stump. In Portland’s older neighborhoods, where the trees are often large-caliper hardwoods, those sprouts can be vigorous. A stump left for a few years becomes a dense multi-stem cluster.

**Decay and pests.** A decaying stump in an urban lot attracts carpenter ants and wood-boring beetles — organisms that don’t stay confined to the stump. They move to adjacent structures and healthy trees.

**Property appearance.** A stump in a yard that’s otherwise well-kept is conspicuous. In Portland’s competitive real estate market, it’s also something a buyer notes and asks about.

**Unusable space.** In a Portland lot where outdoor space is already limited, a stump circle is ground you can’t use.

Old stumps from previous work

Many of our stump grinding calls are for stumps that have been sitting for years — left by previous owners, by contractors who didn’t include grinding, or by storm removals done in a hurry. We handle these as standalone jobs. If you have multiple stumps, we do them in a single visit.
